DECEMBER 2005 SHORE CONFERENCE WRESTLING

Traditional SC Tournaments: all results are at http://www.enter.net/~jkopesky/06tournaments.htm

Matt Rega became the first Point Pleasant Beach wrestler to claim victory No. 100 last Wednesday with a pin against Keyport at 119 pounds. Rega, who placed seventh in the state at 119 last winter and is 102-14 for his career, helped his club to a 42-26 victory while joining Ocean Township's Dan Lopes and Marlboro's Nick Parisi as 100-bout winners from the Shore Conference this season. ... Southern Regional, which defeated Phillipsburg on the road at The Pit earlier this season, makes its second foray into West Jersey on Saturday against Kittatinny. "Our guys like going into gyms of quality opponents on the road," John Stout, coach at the Manahawkin school, said. "They thrive on the attention and don't care where or when the match is. They just are so focused on getting the victory the crowd doesn't even come into play." ... Central Regional 152-pounder Nick Weaver (14-0), fourth in the state at 140 last season, established what is believed to be a state record last Friday when he produced a technical fall in just 1:15. Central won the match against Lakewood, 53-22, and clinched its second Shore Conference-B
Division South title in three years.

Summary of the Freehold Boro Colonials vs. Colts N eck Cougars match on
January 7th:

Freehold beat Colts Neck on Saturday morning by a score of 37-18.

The Colonials had two starters out of the lineup that made the match more competitive. The match started at 135 with Miguel Arroyo(F) taking down Vivino(CN) over and over to the tune of a 16-4 major decision.

At 140 pounds Katz (CN) had an 11-3 lead late in the match over Reiss(F), but Reiss squirted away to keep him to a decison 11-4.

O'shea(F) toughed out a hard fought decision at 145 pounds in overtime 6-4.

At 152 Andrew Rock(F) scored a 5-4 win over Rob Manney(CN) in probably the best bout of the day. Rock came out very agressive on his feet but could not seem to score a takedown till a minute into the match where he led 2-0. After Rock could not break Manney down he cut him loose where Manney countered a shot and scored 2 right before the period ended to take a 3-2 lead. Manney elected to take bottom and escaped to increase his lead to 4-2 and they stayed on there feet for the rest of the period. In the third period Rock escaped to narrow the deficit to 4-3 and eventually took down Manney to secure the victory with seconds remaining.

At 160 Freehold forfeited to Tom Parisi(CN) and at 171 backup Eric Keys(F) stepped in and wrestled a tough match losing 7-3 to Burge (CN).

At 189 Josh Lamb(F) wrestled up a weight class and lost 8-6 to Meyers(CN).

At 215 Anthony Panzarino(F) continued his tear this season in pinning Somma (CN) in 59 seconds. At 275 the always improving Travis Postell(F) pinned Renner(CN) in 2:26.

At 103 Kevin Nulty received a forfeit for Freehold and Danny Franke(F) scored a 7-4 decision over Nikko Brown(CN) in a hard fought contest.

At 119 Ryan Santos(F) won a 6-0 decision over Stoia (CN) to seal the match for the colonials.

At 125 Nick Triozzi(F) wrestled well taking down Gaines(CN) easily at the beginning, but Jeremy Gaines turned the tides in the end and won the match by securing a takedown with 15 seconds left in the match and taking a 7-6 lead. Then Triozzi tried a desperation to move to get out that turned into 3 more backpoints for Gaines, who came out with a 10-6 decision. And at 130 Tom Post(F) closed out the
match with a 4-0 victory over Manney(CN).

Freehold also wrestled Shore winning 47-15.

Side note:

With Ben Ostner and Justin Brown out the Colonials did the best with what they had to improve to 5-2 on the season. The team has a usually tough match Monday at an up- start Keyport team. And a share of the B North title may lay in the balance when the Colonials travel to Wall on Saturday. If Freehold could secure a victory then a share of a division title with Wall and Long Branch could be in reach.

THE NEPTUNE CLASSIC:
The Jags of Jax opened the 2005/06 season with a very strong showing, some would say it’s a better team than last years SC Champs. The Jags put 9 in the finals and 14 in the Top 4, with 6 wrestlers being crowned Champs ( 125 Biscaha., 130 Byrnes, 135 Bradley, 152 Winston, 160 Carney, 171 Hopkins)
A much improved TRE team finished in 4th place with 3 in the finals, 2 Champs (103 Dellafave, 275 Henig). A young Long Branch squad, starting 3 Frosh (Clark, Robertson, Balina), and without a 103 and 112 lber placed 6th with 2 in the finals and 1 champ(145 Sims).

THE ROBIN LEFF TOURNAMENT AT SOUTHERN REGIONAL:
This tournament has become one of the best in NJ and though no team score is officially kept most can figure out where they stand. Four SC teams entered and held their own against some of the best, Southern Regional, Wall, Central Regional, and Marlboro. Host Southern crowned 3 Champs ( 135 Lanno, 140 Molinaro, and 145 Dillard) with 2 additional Runner-ups in Henry at 160 and frosh sensation Glenn Carson at 189 lbs.
Wall placed 4 in the finals crowning 2 Champions in Cappiello at 119 and Doyle at Heavy, both of these guys have what it takes to be in AC come March. Wall’s 2 runner-ups have been to AC, Wilson at 112 and Woszczak at 130.
Central Regional “quietly” put 6 in the finals, outstanding, the defending SJGIII Champs has a great tournament. They crowned 3 Champs ( 130 Lynn, 152 Lyons, and 160 Tenpenny) . Runner-ups 119 Powers, 140 forsyth, and Dendeyn at Heavy show the Golden Eagles to be a very balanced team and a heavy favorite to repeat as Sectional Champs and compete in a very tough Top 5 SC arena.
Nick Parisi of Marlboro captured the 189 lbs and it looks like its paying dividends to his practice partner as Pellicane took runner-up at 171. Tournaments like this will go along way in preping parisi for that state run he has his sites on. Though AC holds the ultimate award he is looking to capture, Marlboro’s first region champ is a milestone many of us would be happy to see Parisi accomplish.

MUSTANG CLASSIC AT BRICK MEMORIAL:
There are only a handful of state caliber tournaments and the shore conference hosts 3 of them. The three already listed with Caldwell, Kittatiny, HC and 1 or 2 more are where the States best open in December. The Mustang Classic is such a showcase , some of the field is it brings in a NY and PA team, Pburg makes the Trip East, Delsea and Eastern come North. SC teams Ocean, Wall, Beach with host Stangs of Brick Memorial battled with state caliber wrestlers. The smallest school, Pt. Beach, had a monster for a Champ in Rega at 119 lbs. Rega made AC last year and seems to be a mid-weight in a 119 body and is just taking no prisoners.
Wall, as they did at Southern, placed 4 in the finals. This time 112 Wilson and again 275 Doyle walked home with the hardware as Frosh 103 Lubrucino and 130 Wosczcak took runner-up.
Host school BM put 3 in the finals with state placewinner barrett at 152 taking gold. 125 Miller and Helibroun took runner-up.
The Spartans of Ocean coming in off a great showing at the Beast of the East (11th out of 87) and a surprise setback to Howell in a dual (28-30), showed they are as good if not better on the mat then on paper. Ocean put 6 in the finals and crowned 4 Champions (130 Lopes, 140 Nunes-Vais, 145 Falco, and OW 171 Kiss and Runnerups 135 van dyk and Inj. Default Sicliano at 189). Kiss beat State Champ Giffen of Eastern. What makes that even more awesome is Giffen put a beating on Kiss last year, Tfalling him in a dual. What a great turn around for Kiss. Unfortunately on the downside, State runner-up Sicliano at 189 broke his ankle in a tied match with transferred 2x Delaware State Champ Jones from Winslow. Word is there is a possibility Sic could be back for district week, lets hope so.  Pound for pound IMO he is the SC best wrestler.

THE ICEBREAKER AT MATAWAN:
An experienced Colts Neck team who we have ranked #10 in Monmouth county finished just behind perennial power house old bridge. Shore Regional followed at 3rd and host Matawan was 4th place. Colts Neck put 4 in the finals and crowned all 4 Champs. Shore had 5 in the finals while Matawan had 4 in the finals. Because this tournament is made up of a majority (12) of SC teams we will list all results instead of highlighting just the SC teams.

THE COLT CLASSIC AT CBA:
The host Colts crowned 5 Champs and had a runner-up as they finished 2nd to North Burlington. Coach Baldi went out and invited a stronger field to this annual event. This year field included teams  from NY and PA making it a very strong tournament for the SC rebuilding teams of. Pinelands (7th), RBR (8th) and Mon. Donovan (8th) . The 5 Champs for the Colts were 125 Besheda, 135 Sangivann, 145 D. Chirichella, 152 Deleo, and 171 A. Chirichella. Runner-ups were CBA 130 Menfra, RBR Saible 145, and Mon. Donovan 112 Depaolo.

HOLMDEL XMAS TOURNAMENT:
This has been around 33 years and serves a great need for the small programs of the SC. Its mainly a Monmouth County tournament but Mon. Donovan from Ocean and Mercer’s Robbinsville and Hopewell Valley were in this years field. It looked to be a 5 team race with the defending champions, Colonials of Freehold Boro, as the slight favorite. After a very competitive day of wrestling, the Colonials hung on to their crown by placing 6 in the finals and crowning 3 Champs, Including 125 Triozzi who took home his 3rd consecutive championship. The Raiders of Keyport bouncing back from a lackluster showing at the Icebreaker, placed 6 in the finals and took 2nd by way of a pin in the finals at Heavyweight. They snuck past (1.5 points) the Titans of Keansburg who were 3rd. Again, because the field is mainly SC teams below are all the results.

1. Freehold 131.5 / 2. Keyport 98.5 / 3. Keansburg 96.5 / 4. Shore 87 /
5. St John Vianney 76.5 / 6. Manasquan 68 / 7. Hopewell Valley 46.5 /

THE HAWK CLASSIC AT MANCHESTER:
While the Neptune, Robin Leff, and Stang Classic draw the States best and the Iceabreaker, Colt Classic, and Holmdel serve the smaller schools well. It is the Hawk Classic and Walter Woods Tournament that full the need of the Top SC teams and those schools maybe not yet NJ Top 20 but on the rise and knocking on that door. Central Regional, coming off that great showing at the Robin Leff, stormed to the title with 8 Finalists and 4 Champions. CBA looked good while placing 5 in the finals taking 2 crowns and the Raritan Rocktes, off their out of state crusade to Virginia, placed 3rd with 6 in the finals and 3 Champs.

WALTER WOODS TOURNAMENT AT MIDDLETOWN SOUTH:
An outstanding finish that saw 1.5 points separate the Top 3 teams. Middletown North Lions upend the Green Wave of Long Branch by a ½ a point with the Panthers of Pt. Boro 1.5 back of that. All 3 teams had 4 Finalists with PPB with 3 Champs. MTN had 2 Champs and LB 1 Champ. Green Wave got hurt by no 103 and their 112 missing weight. But a great tournament for the Lions. The Lions are a well balanced team and may be overlooked this year by some of the Top 5 SC guys to their determent . The Dimaiolo brothers, the Shope Twins, Outstanding Frosh Bruno and more make for a tough Lion squad. This tournament included some of Union County outstanding teams.

1. Midd North 134 / 2. Long Branch 133.5 / 3. Point Boro 132 /
4. Belleville 122 / 5. Elizabeth 105 / 6. Colts Neck 91 / 7. Midd South 88 /
