STAFF REPORT
Both individually and collectively, the Howell wrestling team has been living up to the hype thrust upon it after early season wins over Ocean and Phillipsburg.
The effort it put forth Saturday against No. 9 Toms River East served to show the No. 2 Rebels don't plan on slowing down any time soon.
Senior Bill Woodward upped his record to 10-1 on the season with a 17-4 major decision over Mario Dellave at 152 pounds and Tom Tuminelli improved to 10-2 with a pin over Steve Deangelis at 145 as Howell downed Toms River East, 46-16, in a nondivisional clash Saturday afternoon.
LACEY 41, POINT BEACH 30: Sophomore Tyler Giglio pinned Russ Husarenko at 171 pounds to help the Lions (3-3) close out the Garnet Gulls (3-3) in nondivisional action.
Lacey also had a pin from junior heavyweight Ryan Giglio in the win.
MATAWAN 36, KEANSBURG 30: The Huskies (5-3) came on strong at the end by getting three pins in the final four matches to overtake the Titans (6-1).
Eddie Terry (103 pounds), Cesare Arrista (112 pounds) and freshmen Eddie McCarthy (125 pounds) led the late charge as Matawan handed Keansburg their first dual meet loss of the season.
CENTRAL 74, RUMSON-FH 0: In the Eagles' nondivisional win, Central's Nick Weaver improved his record to 10-0 with a technical fall over Dan Kolarsick.
Weaver's 16-0 victory set a state record for the fastest technical fall at 1:20, breaking the previous mark of 1:44, according to the NJSIAA history of wrestling records.
WALL 34, FREEHOLD 30: Junior Drew Doyle's second period pin capped a 3-0 day for the heavyweight as he moved to 12-0 on the year leading the No. 6 Crimson Knights (7-0, 4-0) to a Class B North win over the Colonials (5-3, 1-2).
While Freehold won eight matches on the afternoon, Wall was fortunate to register six pins and a major decision to get the win.
TR NORTH 36, MANCHESTER 22: Senior Marcos Flores downed Jon Moroz in double overtime, while the Mariners (3-3) also received pins from Dave Newman at 189, freshman Taylor Kau at 103 and junior Matt Oliver at 112 in disposing of the Hawks (4-4).
SOUTHERN 40, PHILLIPSBURG 21: The Rams continued to add to their case as a top-3 school with a dominating victory against the Stateliners at the "Pit."
"We jumped out fast at 145. That took the fans out of it in a hurry," coach John Stout said.
Keith Dillard took the first victory and the Rams added four pins, including one by freshman Glenn Carson, before faltering some in the lower weights when the outcome was sealed.
Southern is now 5-1 and still has dual meets with Kittatinny and Bergen Catholic. |
